You're an only child to a single mother, a teenager really with a high school diploma and the heaviness of assumptions and insecurities around her. She tells you that you're beautiful even though you don't see it in the world of images around you. She tells you that you're smart even though your teachers encourage you less than your peers. She tells you that you can do anything you want although you struggle to see many examples of that in the real world. You grow up, and you struggle as the world devours itself, starting with people who look like you and your father, and sometimes you forget the lessons of your parents and the ancestors before them.
